"It has recently come to the attention of the Nassau County Police department that scammers have been able to spoof actual NCPD phone numbers in an attempt to scam our citizens," Nassau County Police said in a statement. "County Executive Laura Curran and Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder are urging citizens to be vigilant when receiving telephone solicitations or emails from persons identifying themselves as officers or employees of the Department."
The Nassau County Police Department does not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.
"If you receive a call from someone purporting to be a member of our department who requests payment via wire transfer, pre-paid credit card or other means, hang up and call 911," police said.
Personal information should never be released unless verified through proper channels, said police.
Anyone who may have been a victim of any of these scams should call 911 immediately, police said.
